REVIEW: Melody's Echo Chamber - s/t

8 out of 10

Let's face it, ever since Trish Keenan (Broadcast) passed away there has been a certain void in forward-thinking Neo/Post Psych Pop sounds. Lucky enough for us Melody (and her Echo Chamber) took it upon herself to fill this void.

Melody's Echo Chamber is a perfect combination of (cutesy-)Dreamy Indie Pop with a twist of flourishing/colorful Psychedelia, that "French sound" that we as listeners can never get enough of (I can't anyways), and a few other eccentric Electronics noises/samples. I'm pretty sure this is all mostly live instrumentation (drum, bass, guitar, and a synth) but there are a few trippy samples thrown into the mix that really give this artist the edge over all other (current) Post-Psych Pop artists. Like a bright haze of confusing color floating like a mist over melted Pop art, Melody's Echo Chamber's debut release is one not to be missed and it has me completely curious about her next move..

The cover art for this album probably said all that I just said, but better..

Standout Tracks: Crystallized, You Won't Be Missing That Part Of Me, Bisou Magique, Quand Vas Tu Rentrer (LOE this.), Snowcapped Andes Crash

Melody's Echo Chamber Bio:
Paris-based musician Melody Prochet worked in various bands before starting Melody's Echo Chamber in 2012 after having a dream that the acoustics of her bedroom projected an infinite delay. No stranger to performance, Prochet had already worked with the twee pop Narcoleptic Dancers and the dreamy My Bee's Garden, a project she was very much central to. When My Bee's Garden supported Australian guitar rockers Tame Impala on a European tour in 2010, Prochet bonded with Kevin Parker, who offered to help with production of her new solo material as Melody's Echo Chamber. The two worked quickly, with some elements of the project's lushly dreamy songs recorded in Parker's makeshift studio and some laid down in her grandmother's seaside home in the south of France. The self-titled album was released on Fat Possum Records in the fall of 2012 and Prochet assembled a live band to fill out her solo songs as plans for tours and live performances started accumulating.

Hello, how are you?
Very good, I just finished a sweet breakie and I'm sitting in my kitchen in the sun.

What are you currently listening to?
I'm in love with the Connan Mockasin record, we just decided yesterday at practice to cover one of his song for our upcoming tour.

Whom were/are your biggest influences when it came to sculpting your music?
Kevin Parker obviously (the Guru that produced it), and all the sweet people living at the house in Perth where we recorded (some guys from Pond like Nick Allbrook or Cam Avery who are fantastic crazy musicians)

When did this project first come about?
I've always been writing songs and loved collaborating with different People. This project started when I played some of my new material to Kevin when I supported his band in Europe two years ago.

Do you have a personal favorite track?
I think "Bisou Magique" because it's one of the first songs I wrote in French that I am sincerely proud of lyrically.

If you could choose any artist to do a split record with (dead or alive) whom would it be?
I don't know about a split record but I dream to work with Geoff Barrow from Portishead and also always dreamt to have Jonny Greenwood play some Ondes Martenont on one of my songs.

Got any other projects we should know about?
I started a band with my band mate Maud where I play drums, it's called CIDER, I'm really excited about recording some jams soon. We didn't have the time yet. It's just a duo, her on guitar and singing and me on drums and I sing too.

What movie would work best on mute while listening to you music?
Maybe this last scene of Antonioni's ZABRISKIE POINT

You can only keep/listen to ONE album for the rest of your life ..which album would it be?
NOooooo you can't do that to me! Maybe 'Ladies And Gentlemen We're Floating In Space' by Spiritualized.

Are you living your dream?
Definitely, I couldn't dream of a better life..

Thanx Daniel/Melody!

Melody's Echo Chamber is currently touring the US, if you get a moment make sure to check out a show (or two)...

REVIEW: James & Evander - Bummer Pop

7.25 out of 10

Anyone that openly admits Dntel and/or Postal Service as a source of inspiration will (most of the time) be cool with me. James & Evander started making music/jamming only a few years ago as roommates (both of whom have a love for all things Tamborello). Slowly it turned into a full time gig (so to speak), and from there the duo released 'Bummer Pop', a very strong debut that does indeed live up to it's "origins".

For the most part 'Bummer Pop' is a "warm-weather" Indie Pop record, but within these glowing walls lays breezy undertones and playful Electro Pop beats mixed with elements of Spacey Dream Pop. From the get-go the album throws the listener full throttle into a majestic voyage through colourful galaxies, "Ambigamy", the album opener/first single, is by far one of the catchier tracks I've heard all year. The album's flow maintains a peppy attitude through out with nothing "too in your face" or out of place, a few chill pieces, a few spacey vibes, and a lot of kind sounds. Actually, "absolute & bright" sounds like the best way to describe J & E's sound..

I probably should have written about this when it came it (May '12), it was very fitting for the season. A nice late Spring/Early Summer release, a "roll the windows down, let the sun shine, worry about nothing" kind of album. I don't know, maybe you're one of the lucky few that live in one of those "warm/awesome weather all the time" kind of places? If so press play and let the music guide you.. No matter where you live though just check it out, you won't regret it. PS You should also invest (it's free) in the remix album..

Standout Tracks: Ambigamy, The Creative Process, CTSOF, How It Feels, Nostalgia (so good)

James & Evander
Shiny Chill Pop

JamEs & Evander Bio
James & Evander started in the apartments of its two members (whose real names happen to be Adam Myatt and Glenn Jackson) while both were attending an art school of sorts back in 2007. Driven by a love of synthesizers and a healthy curiosity for sonic exploration, J&E turned out a number of EPs over its first few years of existence, at first crafting tender slices of indietronica with The Awkard Turtle EP and later turning out stoney pieces of instrumental synth-pop on 2010’s Sunlight and Circuitry. Last year, the pair successfully added its own vocals to the mix, resulting in a three-track EP which molded the pairs’ knack for rich, flowing soundscapes into a space-age take on vocal-driven pop music. The Constellating EP opened up James & Evander’s appeal to a whole new audience, and helped them push their own spin on “future-pop” to new corners.  Now, after making a brief stop in the land of galactic disco for a 7″ with Gold Robot Records, J&E have issued their debut full-length, Bummer Pop, a record that continues in the vein of Constellating with 10 songs of lush, infectious pop, complete with layers of cavernous vocals. Inspired by the diverse Oakland electronic scene from which the duo stem (running with the likes of Yalls, Shortcircles, Elephant & Castle, etc.), Bummer Pop attempts to cover a lot of ground, moving through moments of disco-tinged dancefloor fair, spiralling chillwave, synth-soaked indie-pop, and hazy sections of blissed-out beat work. The album’s constant is its layered vocal contributions, which both Myatt and Jackson share, landing on introspective themes that fit the music’s personal tone. It’s an inviting debut that doesn’t attempt to shout out its presence, but rather hopes to envelope the listener in blankets of sound, revealing more and more details with each listen.

Hello, how are you?
A bit hung over. We were asked to be the DJs for a Starfucker show last night, which was basically a license for drinking to excess.

What are you currently listening to?
The new Xx record and a new album from our Oakland friends Religious Girls just came out, so that's what we've been listening to this morning. Also, the new Luke Abbott EP, 'Modern Driveway', has been on repeat lately.

Is there one particular band/sound/idea that inspired this project?
Years ago, we bonded over a shared love for DNTEL/Jimmy Tamborello/Postal Service and Moog synths. We were attending an "art school" of sorts at the time, and had an opportunity to use the studio spaces there to first try any and all ideas out. Somehow, we landed on stoned-out synth-pop.

LOVE your debut LP, care to tell us a little bit about it; theme, recording process, likes/dislikes, etc.?
We basically began by taking stock of all the tracks we had started over for the years but for one reason or another never finished. For instance, "What Else Is New?" was started way back in 2007 (and it took us recording three different drummers to get it to finally work) and "I Don't Mind" is built from a riff Glenn/Evander had been playing since his high school days. From there, we just kept jamming and experimenting until we found 10 songs we were happy with that didn't all sound the same (we hope). 'Bummer Pop' brought on a lot of challenges, especially expanding our still limited experience with vocals into the full-length format, so some of it now sounds a bit underdeveloped to us. Honestly, we're still learning how to use our voices every time we play a show or write a new song!

What's your favorite track and why?
"The Creative Process" and "I Don't Mind" are up there because they were so fun to make, we had the opportunity to stretch the "J+E sound" and include some live drums, acoustic guitars, and friends' vocal talents into our sonic palette.

Will you be touring for said release?
Unfortunately, we're just not up for any hardcore touring. We've played a lot of shows in and around California since the release, and we'd like to make it up to the Northwest at some point, but really, we'd rather just make more songs for now!

Got any other projects we should know about?
Definitely! We have our hands in a variety of things at all times it seems, but we've been working on some new tunes for a project called Hoodcats, a collaboration between us and Shortcircles (our housemate). It helps us get out our more ridiculous dance music inclinations, plus it's provided a nice excuse to sample Mark Morrison and Christina Aguilera!

What movie would work best on mute while listening to your music?
Ghostbusters, or maybe an episode of Pete and Pete?

You can only keep/listen to ONE album for the rest of your life ..which album would it be?
We'd almost probably rather listen to nothing than just one album for the rest of our lives! But, if we had to choose, probably Four Tet's 'There Is Love In You', really still haven't gotten over how flawlessly gorgeous that whole album is!

Are you living your dream?
Maybe the dream of 16 year-old us when all we wanted was to do was live in a house that had a studio in it and to be working on music all the time. Just didn't picture that house in the Oakland ghetto or the music-making to involve so much weed perhaps!

Thanx Tim + J & E!

James & Evander recently released a remix companion to 'Bummer Pop', which can be found HERE (for free).

EIC's 10Q's w/ Moons

"..part Neon/Glam Synth Pop meets exploratory Dark Dream/Space Pop.."

Dark Neon Illusions

Moons Bio:
Moons is Atlanta-based Patrick Canaday. So far a 7" as well as a couple mixtapes have been released, but if these songs are any indication of this artist's capabilities be prepared for a headphone takeover..

Hello, how are you?
Doing well.

What are you currently listening to?
A LOT of Sci Fi soundtracks, a lot of vintage Indian Pop, Philip Glass' 'North Star', Solid Space, Lower Dens, CH-BB, Eno’s 'Another Green World', Hooray For Earth's 'True Loves', Cocteau Twins 'Bluebell Knoll', Junip, Fleetwood Mac’s 'Mystery To Me' and 'Tango In The Night', Clams Casino, Niki And The Dove is pretty cool (especially the mixes), Berlin, Kym Amps, Eurythmics..

What's with the name, is there a story behind it?
The human experience is nothing but fanned out phases of consciousness. The moons of heavenly bodies mimic the phases we experience on a visual level, an archetypal level, and a magnetic level. Moons is Pop music at its simplest, but the grander picture is intended to be an exploration of the fluidity and chaos of the experiences we have in this universe. I started toying with this name after my mother showed me the classic ‘Paper Moon’ several years ago.

Is there a release date/debut album title yet?
Not just yet.

Will you be touring for said release?
Shows in Atlanta and NYC late Summer/Fall/Winter. Touring in 2013.

In a dream world whom would you like to tour with the most?
Hard question. Lets say…….Bowie on his "Let’s Dance" tour.

Got any other projects we should know about?
I produce and mix other projects on the side. Look out for new music from Atlanta bands Moodrings, Promise Keeper, and Dog Bite in 2013, all projects that I have worked on.

What movie would work best on mute while listening to your music?
Lawrence Of Arabia or anything Andreas Nilsson makes..

You can only keep/listen to ONE album for the rest of your life ..which album would it be?

Are you living your dream?
No, I’m quite awake.

Thanks Patrick!

Moons is currently working on his debut full length, (if I had to guess) look for that sometime in 2013...
