REVIEW(S): TOP 100 ALBUMS OF 2013

In-case you missed it.. We all have eclectic tastes, all music is completely subjective and personal (you know this). In my opinion this was a massive year for new/ear-titillating music. This list was actually dwindled down from at least 400+ other great albums..(some that just barely missed the cut, and I wonder.. Should I have in included them anyways?) But surely no one would be interested, nor have the time to read a list that big right? That's where my "compromise" of 100 comes in. I think I got this list down pretty tight this year though. There's always room for improvement I'm sure, and I'd love to debate these things with anybody, but I think we can agree on at least of couple of things in..

10. James Blake - Overgrown
When James Blake's debut came out I was impressed, I know this guy was up to something exceptional. Flash forward a couple years later (if that) and Mr. Blake has released his second official LP 'Overgrown'. Just as the title suggest James has grown quite a bit since he's previous efforts. James has proved why he just may be one of the most important Electronic "Pop"/R&B (good job on the Grammy nod;) producers of the 21st century.

On 'Overgorwn' the listener is treated to a fine array of synthesized layers, Dub Step beats (the chill kind), Jazzy piano & strings, and of course James berceuse vocal talent. This album has too much soul to go unnoticed + I dare you to not find at least one track you can't obsess over on 'Overgrown'. If emotional sound is beautiful to you I recommend you get this now.

I'm really interested to see where James Blakes goes next, especially after all this new found attention he's been getting (he does deserve it).

Standout Tracks: I Am Sold, Life Round Here, Take A Fall For Me (Feat. RZA), Retrograde, Digital Lion (Eno produced), Voyeur, Our Love Comes Back
 9. Oh, Yoko - I Love You...
Back in 2008 (the year EIC began) a little known Japanese artist named Rie Mitsutake release her debut album under the moniker Miko. It was the best thing I heard that entire year, and to this day 'Parade' still gives me shivers in all the right places (seriously though, the spiritual connection I have with this album is unearthly). Flash forward 5 years later (EIC is still here;), a second LP, a few guest contributions, and now this; (her latest) split project with none-other than (Ambient legend?) Will Long (aka Celer*). *I have a few Celer releases which are very warm-Ambient-gorgeous, but I'll be honest he's quite the prolific artist so I haven't even really begun to absorb everything he's been apart of.. From what I've heard Miko + Celer  = a match made in heaven.

On 'I Love You...'; tracks like "Boîte De Nuit" and their swirly/airy synth floating over a peculiar/riding bass line shortly followed by Miko's sweet/endearing vocals remind me, (oddly) of something MBV might do on one of their softer tracks. "Daylight Lunch" gives you the sense of  going backwards in a dream, if you can imagine that you can imagine why that should make your ears perk up, simply sublime from first to last note. "Grand Prix" is a full-on bouncy/catchy Pop jam with a washed out Electronic Psych backdrop, still very subdued and soft though. Oh! And of course the track "Ice Skating In The Dark", this does special things to my brain*. Every track with it's own unique personality shines. There are so many layers to pick apart and cling onto on Oh, Yoko's debut LP I wouldn't even know where to end.. Sorry I am a little too hypnotized by the music right now to even think coherently enough..All hail Hypnotoad Oh, Yoko! ::mhmm:: Assuming you like Soft Gaze music, Electronic/Ambient Dream Pop, Minimal Folk, and/or other spacey-lullaby sounds related in nature 'I Love You..' is there for you.

*You need Oh, Yoko in your life.

Standout Tracks: (oh gawd, don't make me pick..) Toumei, Grand Prix, I Did This I Did That, Boîte De Nuit, Daylight Lunch, Ice Skating In The Dark,
8. Dean Blunt - The Redeemer
Dean Blunt is a bit of an odd fellow isn't he? It's hard to strap a label on his sound, I guess it makes sense that he's a part of the Hippos In Tanks family. Each track on 'The Redeemer' is an exercise in getting over past love obsessions, so naturally the music style/compositions change every other track.

Deformed Pop music somewhat reminiscent of TVOTR's debut EP (which is still their best in my opinion) mixed with drugged/psyched out Electronic music paired with extremely narrative samples. A bit of Nu R&B meets Trip Hop meets Psych Pop meets Jazz meets Moondog maybe? IDFK. Just trust me on this one..

I've heard the term "amateur genius" floating around the web, I couldn't agree more. This one may be a hard sell towards an improper crowd, but given the right set of headphones you'll understand why I would recommended this album so highly.

Standout Tracks: There all so fluid together, but if I had to pick; The Pedigree, Demon, Flaxen, The Redeemer, Walls Of Jericho, Y3, Papi, Brutal
 7. Shelling - Shelling
This is the debut full length from Japanese duo Aya & Shota aka Shelling. “Shelling” means to gather shells on the beach. The album was produced by Chihei Hatakeyama (Kranky). Other than that I can tell you it's kind of hard to find much more info on these guys, let alone something in English (that I can read).. I guess there is at least one more thing I can tell you; this is one of the best Dream Pop albums of all time, that and fans of Guitar and/or Mahogany will definitely obsess over these heavenly-saturated sounds.

If the names "Guitar" or "Mahogany" are too obscure for you, think "Asobi Seksu's soft side" mixed with ethereal electronics. Aya's cute/a bit understated vocals are absolutely pitch-perfect from beginning to end of this release, always carrying the melody rather than just repeating it. The guitar work is also quite lovely, although somewhat minimal and mostly layered noise oriented it comes across pristine and delicate (exactly where you would expect it (or want it) to be on a truly magnificent Dream Pop album). Shota's synth production and inhibited Electronics are so perfect too.. Somewhat quiet (but then again the whole album is for that matter, although maybe "gentle" is better term here.. ::mmhmm::) The whole release is very soothing, everything is completely relaxing & comforting. If cute & seductive Electronic Dream Pop music sounds up your alley I suggest you listen to this NOW.

Hands down my favorite Dream Pop album of 2013. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Standout Tracks: If I'm You., 8 Bright Moonlight, Over (i wish it never was), Milky Way, Endless Beautiful Days (with this as a soundtrack, i would imagine so), Cave
6. L. Pierre - The Island Come True
Ambient "Drone" music is a hard thing to pull off. There are waaaay too many projects given waaaay too much credit under this category, and only a few actually surprise & awe. A sub-category in said field would be Haunted Ballroom, not many other artists have tackled this sound yet unfortunately. And I wonder, why is that? Am I missing a whole subculture underground thing somewhere?

L. Pierre's last masterpiece ('Dip') came out over five years ago, it is also an equally astonishing work of art (if you haven't already discovered that for yourself). Mixing ghostly/other worldsy sounding vocal samples, morose piano chords, slightly horrifying synths, nostalgic (barely there) strings, white noises & vinyl crackles, plus a few other "old timey" sounding samples; 'The Island Come True' is a masterpiece of obscured time & sound. All of these elements are intertwined and melded into an intense out of body dream-like experience. If you can assume the vibe based off the cover design you're somewhat on the same level, just a lot more heady and somewhat hallucinogenic. There's something haunting about visiting and empty orpheum an imagining the sounds that once filled its void. Somehow L. Pierre found a way to capture this spectral resonance phenomenon and bring it to the beach with him.

Absolutely essential to any serious music-lover's collection. When music makes me feel this way..I'm just so.. Content.

Standout Tracks: Harmonic Avenger, Sad Laugh, The Grief That Does Not Speak, Now Listen!, Exits, Tulpa, + the entire bonus album.
5. Arp - More
Arp is officially one of my favorite acts of all time, his last release; 'The Soft Wave', was nearly perfect. And now this; 'More', which is one of the best experiences I've had with "Experimental Glam Pop" since Eno's 'Taking Tiger Mountain' and possibly even more nearly perfect.. Actually; 'More' kind of sounds like the "audio sequel" to 'Taking Tiger..' and I'm OK with that.

I know, I keep saying it, but the similarities between Arp and Eno's work are very present (in a great way too!). Where 'The Soft Wave' covered Eno's Ambient side, 'More' covers the Pop. On 'More' Arp re-imagines vintage Glam Rock/Pop productions with a slightly modern touch. I also think fans of James Murphy's work may agree with some of the tones that are going on here. Nearly every track on here sounds like a get the entire stadium foot stomping kind-of-anthem, or at least something to slow dance to. This is just a good feeling album with tons of promising everything written all over it. You need this in your life, trust me. Honestly, do I really need to say more than "comparable to Eno's 'Taking Tiger Mountain'?* *If I do, you're missing out on one of the most important albums of all time.

HIGHLY RECOMMenDEDo.

Standout Tracks: High Heeled Clouds, Judy Nylon, A Tiger In The Hall At Versailles, Light + Sound, Gravity (For Charlemagne Palestine), More (Blues) (more please.), Daphne & Chloe
4. Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven
Oh OPN, you never disappoint me. You only get better ..err different (different and better?) IDK really.. with every release. Oneohtrix Point Never started off as more of a Spacey Ambient project, 'Rifts' is particularly amazing if you haven't checked it out yet ('Returnal' is also pretty amazing), you'll appreciate/love his early releases if you love Eno's 'Apollo..' and/or the likes. To be honest most everything Daniel Lopatin touches is gold. I consider him to be the smartest synthElectronic artist out there currently. A couple years ago Daniel released his first "bigger"/more broader spectrum of sound exploration; 'Replica' (man this guys like the letter "R"), I love that release as well.. I think it surprised a lot of people though. From previous releases you would expect something more Ambient, and on 'Replica' Mr. Lopatin doesn't stray "too far" from this concept, but he does add elements of IDM in there. It's weird IDM too, not many left brainers may appreciate it, but for people in need of something that makes them question their own sanity, it may be right up your alley. Anyways it was/is a great release, surprising or not it hit all the right notes in my opinion. On 'R Plus Seven' (again with the "R's" and this guy..) Daniel fully encompasses 'Replica's' concept for making Ambient noise fun and somewhat Abstract Pop sensible. In-fact he forms & fuses all of the concepts he's mastered over the years into his most massive, as well important releases of his career. And not just Daniel's career, 'R Plus Seven' may be one of the best Electronic albums I may have/and will ever hear.

I don't really know where to begin when describing OPN's "music". Hmm, side note: I always wondered where does "Oneohtrix Point Never" as a title even come from? Answer; an easy listening station where Daniel Lopatin's resides/or used to reside (Boston, MA) called "106.7 The Magic". I just thought I'd share that with those unaware, becuase it's a weird enough name to maekenayoen wonder . Anyways back to describing Daniel's brand of sound.. I'm pretty sure it's all live midi-triggered, a bit sporatic sounding, very intense, acumen, and unique. "Ambient/IDM" is the easiest most genereic label, but really it's waay more than just that. 'R Plus Seven' starts with a dark (slightly drone)y organ sound, soon enough a small tempo fades up from the background, soon after that an arpeggiated Organ melody comes inn (woah! this sounds almost like a robotic Philip Glass..). Let this intro set the mood for where this abstract dream sequence is about to take you..hold on thoughhg, it'sabout ta get weird.. Shortly after the glorious intro is over children are playing in loop, trees are breathing, airy synths fade in..::cruncch curnch crhhcnch:: beaittiful xylaphone sounds are dancing between beatiufil fantcstic keyboards jabbssa sounds that almost remind me of playing Donkey Kong Cntry (you played that game rigght?). Honestly from there it just keeps shufflfng and moving into different territiorees of weird sound thrat are best described by yourself when listening to the album. You;ll have fun trying to pin pont some of the samples utililzed in this, as they are so sporaticly pplaced. By the way thewrew a lot of typos intheis revewiu beasuce that how this album makeae my braing feelhs.

You like noise dont' you? I'm gonna go ahead and give my guarantee on this release, if you don't like I'll buy your copy from you* *I get to kick you in the shins on my way out. highly 'R'ecommended (+7)

Standout Tracks: ALL (I know, I say this a lot, but seriously this album is as close to perfect as you can possibly get) ..but if I HAD to be picky; Boring Angel (what a perfect intro), Zebra (can't remove this from my ears), Still Life (intense), Chrome Country
3. Julianna Barwick - Nepenthe
I've been infatuated with Julianna Barwick's sublime vocal magic since her first official release 'Florine' (2010) came out. That's not that long ago, but since then Ms. Barwick has been keeping herself quite busy. 3 solo albums + 2 collaborative works (all of which are amazing) is pretty sufficient if you ask me. When a new release comes out I always think to myself "there is no way this girl can top herself with this release, there's no way she can create something even more unfathomably beautiful than she has before.." She does (and will most likely continue in this tradition), and in-fact, her releases seem to become even more possibly "Pop accessible" than before. I am OK with this concept actually. Julianna has taken all of the charming moments from Choral music mixed them with heavenly drones & synths, piano chords, and layers of reverberated melodic euphoria. This leaves me wanting to listen to the album again (over and over), and I do. The fact is I can't listen to this album just once when I press play, 'Nepenthe' is pure ear heroin created by a genuinely celestial heroin. I just said  "heroin" twice there, see what I did? Once I get this drug between my headphones I can't seem to pull myself away..

I watched a video interview with Julianna Barwick a while back where she mentioned talking to (I believe) her father (maybe grandfather?) she was showing this relative her music, they thought it was lovely & beautiful (of course they would right?). The one criticism that stuck out though was, "I would love to hear you sing some more Julianna.." and on 'Nepenthe' Julianna finally confronts this concept and conforms a new layer of bliss with stronger composition, more vocal harmonies, more "actual" singing (and this is where I think her music will evolve/flourish best). I know Julianna is on the cusp of releasing quite possibly the most epic Ambient album of all time (if she hasn't already done so). Tracks like "The Harbinger" and/or "One Half" should bring anyone one (especially in the right mood) to tears. I'm just so fu%^&ing in-love with this album, you have no idea.

I personally guarantee if you've ever needed an "Ambient" album that penetrates your ear soul, this is it. Oh! One more thing, watch this video, now.

Standout Tracks: ALL. Especially; The Harbinger, One Half (ohhhgaaawwwwdddsssoogooodd), Labyrinthine, Forever
2. My Bloody Valentine - M B V
I (amongst many other Shoegazers) honestly never thought I would see this day come to be, I kinda figured "Chinese Democracy II" would be out first. Then one day (late Dec.) My Bloody Valentine post something on their facebook; "On 21-12-12 we finished mastering the new album!", ..Kevin had promised this for years now. In-fact as you all know it's been 20+ years since 'Loveless' came out. A little bit after the first post Mr. Shields teased us with "The record may or may not be out in the next 2-3 days..." Side Note: If F5 was ever a lonely/overlooked key it finally had it's glory day. I checked, everyone checked over and over again, 4 days pass, 5 days, 6 days.. Late Saturday afternoon: "We are preparing to go live with the new album/website this evening. We will make an announcement as soon as its up." ?!! Checking, checking, checking, listening to classic My Bloody Valentine material while doing so of course... checking, checking.. boom. Midnight = new My Bloody Valentine album.. Don't celebrate just yet.

If ever an album has been hyped in my life time, 'M B V' would take the cake, I honestly can't see myself witnessing anything as "large/important" as this release for quite possibly the rest of my life (I hope that's not the case, but man I can't imagine..). 20 years in the making?? F$%^ IT BETTER BE GOOD! So it's midnight:05.. why hasn't my download begun? Well, to torture us just a little bit longer, MBV & Co. forgot to look into overloaded bandwidth errors..(those happen when everyone bum-rushes a website at once) I got into the site, I got to the store (I was there right away), but that's as far as I could take it.. The site crashed, it crashed hard. A couple hours later into the night, while witnessing/participating in one of the funniest comment threads in facebook history, the album was out but nearly impossible to acquire. It felt like a "community" of happy-shocked, (kinda) patient believing in the same thing, group of people -- all waiting together. I  hope, you got to participate because it really was fun;] After all the nails from both of my hands have been chewed off and anger has subdued into toxic passive aggressive a break in the chain FINALLY happens.. I get in, I log on, I purchase..(immediate download with) a vinyl copy.. This can''t be real, this can't be happening, the day came! I'm hyped/pumped & I feel like I'm in some sort of surreal moment in my life (maybe?)..maybe, am I too pumped? (no.)

First thing's first, get all the comparisons out of your head, don't ask yourself "is this 'the next Loveless'?", just listen to this album and believe that My Bloody Valentine actually had (at least) one more thing they wanted to share with you. I'm not going to tell you if this is their best release or worst release, it simply IS them. To be honest though, 'M B V' definitely is the next logical step after 'Loveless'. Is 20+ years pushing it? Yes, but we all know the kind of luck Mr. Shields has. The fans waited patiently (what else could we do), a reunion happened + some re-releases here and there = they made a lot of money. They spent it (an absurd amount of money) on new studio equipment/audio toys. The vision has always been there, the means to do so have always been in question. So maybe 20 years was the only way to do this right? This debate will rage on I'm sure. No matter what, it was their baby all along, when they felt it was aged properly enough for the world to be blessed by it's awesome powers they would release it amongst the hopeful. (--woah. That sounds sort of biblical). They wanted it (their "holy opus") to sound a particular way, and I'm pretty sure they did it in such a fashion. There are lot of familiar tones, and sounds from the previous MBV era; unique/testing the listeners tolerance guitar distortions (so many new explorations--love it!), a few more "in-the-front keyboard riffs, the vocals sound as amazing as ever, the drumming is perfect & complex, it's a lot louder too, every element is exactly what I would want from a new MBV release. If I had any complaints; 1. The artwork, I'm hoping there's an explanation on the way. 2. Although almost an hour long, I wish there were 2-3 more tracks. Am I greedy sure, but I will always constantly crave/want more/new My Bloody Valentine (I can't help it, the addiction is too strong). Will this release be for any general music listener out there? No. But for fans of guitar pedals and all things perplexed-lush-androgynous (and [obviously] MBV fans), you probably won't find a better release all year long. You know exactly what you're in for, you will not be let down, they gang is back. My Bloody Valentine have delivered the goods one (last?) time. Please don't make us wait another 20 years though OK?

HIGHLY (no need to recommend this, you already own it.) RECOMMENDED.

Standout Tracks: (all of them) Only Tomorrow, Who Sees You, Is This And Yes, If I Am (stains my brain, can't get this song out..), New You, Nothing Is

+++++++++++++++++++++++(..and the #1 Album of 2013 is..)+++++++++++++++++++++++
1. Baths - Obsidian
In-case you missed it, I'm obsessed with Baths, I love everything Will Wiesenfeld is involved in. From his Ambient project Geotic, to his pre-Baths Indie Electronic Ambient Pop project [Post-Foetus], to all the remixes hes done as well as all collabs hes been apart of, ALL of it. I love the infinite amount of emotions and sounds that blossom and evolve upon multiple listens of Will's entire body of work. To say the very least, I was/still am pretty excited for 'Obsidian' (possibly my personal biggest hype of the year) and (guess what?) I'm not let down either. I've listened to the album over 15 times in one week (at least).. still coming back to it, and having this burning desire to listen to it over and over again once it immediately ends.

Before this album came out I heard a couple snippets as well as few mini reviews, Mr. Baths actually said something along the lines of "his most Pop accessible release to date", in some ways that it true. But it's hard for ominous/Experimental Electronic music to mix properly with that concept sometimes and I definitely feel much of 'Obsidian' has it's dark side (with a glimmer of hope I suppose). So, in that sense I feel it's not fair to just lump this album in with all the other "Indie Pop" albums. No one out there sounds like Baths in my opinion. On 'Obsidian' the beats are better than they've ever been (I'm sure Jimmy appreciates some of these sounds;), the vocals are just sooo much more amazing (somehow possibly stronger & better than before), and the overall composition of each track is truly ear orgasmic. I love every element of everything on this release. Seriously, I can admit it, isn't it about time you did too? Stop pretending you're not obsessed with Baths.

Is this Baths best album? That's personal. All I can tell you is that this album is utterly essential to any person who's ever had an interest in intelligent "Bedroom Electronica". HIGHLY "I'll buy your copy from you if you don't like it." RECOMMENDED.

Standout Tracks: ALL (especially) Iron Works (one of the shining examples of what Will can do with his truly unique/amazing vocal talent, also the layers of melodies in this..wow.), Incompatible, No Eyes (quite possibly has my vote for the catchiest song of the year.), No Past Lives (woah.), Earth Death (holy wow, this is going to sound AMAZING live! Update: It did;)
