EIC's 10Q's w/ Puce Moment

"..psychedelic-mechanical.."

Puce Moment
Paralyzing Darkness

Puce Moment Bio:
Puce Moment is the musical and visual project of Nicolas Devos and Penelope Michel (aka CERCUEIL). Kenneth Anger ay not necessarily be the name that will come to mind when listening for the first time - distracted, confused, disoriented - to Puce Moment's debut album. Yet it is the only one that will seem relevant upon second listen -narcotic, infernal, fascinating.  Puce Moment does not only borrow a title (of his eighth short film, made in 1949) from the baron noir of experimental cinema. Ghostly wanderings, satanic Masses, mystical romances, mechanical hell : everything in the duo from Lille (France) and their album in form of an invocation to ancient Sybarites authorities refers to the Californian filmmaker's obsessions. Launched in 2006 by Nicolas Devos and Penelope Michel, along with their project Cercueil (responsible for three albums particularly noteworthy), Puce Moment has so far existed mainly on stage, diluted over time (a handful of concerts only) and image ( projections, performances or contemporary dance pieces). Ice, dust and blinding flashes of white light : Puce Moment had the scene, the soul and backbone were only missing. This will be achieved in 2012. Isolated in a cabin, the duo composed and recorded nine songs that make up their first album, between spectral marauding ("Moonoom") and drone wizards ("Legacy"), resurrecting old ghosts ("Video Dada" single title survivor of their invisible past), revealing the first images of a future draped in chrome ("L'ombre", composed for choreographe (Christian Rizzo's new project ). Mastered by Joe Lambert (Animal Collective, Young Magic, Dirty Projectors), Puce Moment is both the sum of a singular journey, fueled by forays into dance and cinema - a confirmation of their simply unreal abilities - and the beginning of a long and disturbing procession. Their next step will be the stage for which the group is preparing a set modeled after their music: blazing, poisonous, untouchable, but always human.

Hello, how are you?
We are quite ok, we just came back from our rehearsal for our forthcoming shows at Mixtures Festival in Bordeaux and at Trabendo in Paris (with Liars). The sound was good so we can expect good shows. The only problem come from our van, the poor boy is getting old so we have to fix some problems before we hit the road. So is our car ok..?

What are you currently listening to?
We just got few different vinyl records, so we are listening to those these days... lasts releases being; The Knife, PVT, and Matmos. We finally succeeded in finding the vinyl version of Liar's 'Drums Not Dead' so we are also listening to that. We also bought the 'Berberian Sound Studio' movie soundtrack made by Broadcast (the movie was good too by the way, something like early Polanski). We  went to a second hand market and found lots of good oldies as well; Satie, Les Percussions De Strasbourg, Ligeti, Stockhausen... all very cheap, we were lucky that day!

Is there a story behind the band name?
The name "Puce Moment" comes from a Kenneth Anger movie. Kenneth Anger for those who don't know is an experimental underground filmmaker from the early 50's. He realized such movies as Scorpio Rising, Lucifer Rising, Invocation Of My Demon Brother...The music takes a really important place in all of his movies. Puce Moment was one of his first short movies made in 1949, with two great songs by Jonathan Halper on it.

When did this project come about and did you have a planned sound you were going for?
The project was created in 2006, at first we didn't plan to record an album or to tour with this project. It was only one time shows or music we made for a movie, theater, and/or dance. We decided last year to record some of this music we made for these events and make them into an album. Before we recorded the songs, we wanted to have time to creates new ones, so we rent a small house in a forest and came with all our gear. We finally created there a whole new album, so we gave up with the idea of recording the old work.

Care to shed some light on your latest s/t LP; theme, favorite track, etc?
We can't say there were a theme behind the album. We try to have all of the songs different from one and another while at the same time we wanted the album to stay coherent in it's entirety. We gave up songs that finally didn't fit with the whole album but will perhaps fit those on a new release one day.

Will you be touring extensively for said release?
Yes we would love to! We are starting to book shows ourselves, but we would really need to find a booking agent. So we are open to any suggestions;]!

Got any other projects we should know about?
We are running another band together (Penelope & Nico from Puce Moment), this band is called Cercueil, which means "coffin" in French. We could say that Cercueil is more Pop or "more direct" than Puce Moment. We already recorded two albums with Cercueil. We are also touring this year with a live soundtrack project on David Lynch's 'Eraserhead'. We already played few festivals in France with this project and we will be playing Finland and Nederland this summers as well.

What movie would work best on mute while listening to you music?
Well on Eraserhead our music fit well, but we recreated a complete soundtrack for the movie so that's why it fit so well. But if you were just muting a movie and playing the Puce Moment record, perhaps on one of Guy Maddin's movies (his latest 'Ulysses Souviens-Toi!' is amazing) or maybe Hiroshi Teshigahara's 'Suna No Onna'...

You can only keep/listen to ONE album for the rest of your life ..which album would it be?
I would prefer not to listen to music anymore and remember the music I used to listen to than to listen to the same album till the end of my life. But if we had to choose one, perhaps 'Flaming Tunes' by Gareth Williams and Mary Currie.

Are you living your dream?
I would say we are trying to build some...

Thanx Nico & Penolope and Jerome too!

Puce Moment recently released their debut LP, make sure you check into that right away..

EIC's 10Q's w/ Gliss

".."cinematic ominous" with "subconscious alter-reality".."

Gliss
Disconsolated Empryrean Elation

Gliss Bio:
Danish/American band Gliss makes a huge departure from their old sound on the new record Langsom Dans which is gathering comparisons to Beach House, Crystal Castles and Lower Dens. The LA based trio, consisting of Victoria Cecilia, Martin Klingman and David Reiss, pour their collective musical imaginations into recording timeless art pop with a precise Scandinavian texture that steps away from their previous work. The 12-track LP features heavy synths and electronic beats with Danish expatriate, Victoria Cecilia, stepping into the role as lead singer. The passionate vocal harmonies dictate the recordings with stories of coming out of the darkness into a new life, bringing to mind The XX, Portishead and Depeche Mode.

Hello, how are you?
Hello! I am feeling pretty good today. Made a huge vegetable juice about an hour ago. That stuff wakes me up!

What are you currently listening to?
Diamond Rings, Bat for Lashes, Twin Shadow, and no matter what Howlin’ Wolf is always there.

Why the name "Gliss", and do you still feel that this title/name is as relevant now as it may have been in the beginning?
It had to be called something, Gliss still fits the vibe.

Care to tell us a little bit about your latest release 'Langsom Dans'; theme, favorite track(s), snags in recording, etc.?
'Langsom Dan's is a huge departure from our old sound, so it took us a couple of years weeding through tracks, and settle on the direction we wanted to take. In the past the 3 of us would write the songs at the rehearsal space, jamming. But this time around it was so un-inspiring. Nothing interesting or new happened that way. So Martin and I (Victoria) started writing individually, and then meeting up and working on those songs. We would record a basic demo, and then experiment with different chord changes, and different instruments on the track. We spent a lot of time on the drums. We would program a beat, and then try every single effect on it. We would isolate the snare and find an effect we liked, then only keep the echo of the effected snare, and completely delete the snare hit. ..Things like that…Days..months..of finding sounds we liked. Another big change is that I took on the role as lead-singer. Martin is still singing a couple of songs, but most of them I sing now. That was all Martin’s idea. I think he enjoys being a drummer again. Lucky us, ‘cos he is great! We got some good advice from Gareth Jones, who mixed our 2nd album. We used to always switch instruments, and he suggested we each just stick to what we do best. So now Martin plays drums-and sings, David plays guitar, and I sing and play keys.

Will you extensively touring the US for said release?
We are leaving on Wednesday actually for some US dates*, and then we will continue to Europe from there.
*band has returned from the US, and is now onto Europe.

Speaking of touring, in a dream world whom would you choose to tour with if you could pick anybody (dead or alive)?
Depeche Mode, Bat for Lashes, The Knife, Bjork, Ramones, The Birthday Party

Got any other projects we should know about?
Martin has his own solo project,it’s just called “Martin Klingman”. It’s very beautiful acoustic songs. I have a project as well called Night Belles. Very dark stuff. I have put out a couple of tracks here and there, mainly for movies, but will make an album available some time this year. David’s thing is photography, he has this sick camera he brings with him everywhere.

What movie would work best on mute while listening to you music?
Any David Lynch movie.

You can only keep/listen to ONE album for the rest of your life ..which album would it be?

Are you living your dream?
I always want more. But I am pretty satisfied at the moment. I spend as much time as I can doing things that are exciting to me. Obviously music takes up most of my time, but I also take acting classes, which I love. I have always loved the theater. And living in Los Angeles you have access to some great teachers.

Thanx Gliss!

Gliss are currently touring Europe, and then (hopefully) revisiting the US shortly after...

EIC's 10Q's w/ Moons

"..part Neon/Glam Synth Pop meets exploratory Dark Dream/Space Pop.."

Dark Neon Illusions

Moons Bio:
Moons is Atlanta-based Patrick Canaday. So far a 7" as well as a couple mixtapes have been released, but if these songs are any indication of this artist's capabilities be prepared for a headphone takeover..

Hello, how are you?
Doing well.

What are you currently listening to?
A LOT of Sci Fi soundtracks, a lot of vintage Indian Pop, Philip Glass' 'North Star', Solid Space, Lower Dens, CH-BB, Eno’s 'Another Green World', Hooray For Earth's 'True Loves', Cocteau Twins 'Bluebell Knoll', Junip, Fleetwood Mac’s 'Mystery To Me' and 'Tango In The Night', Clams Casino, Niki And The Dove is pretty cool (especially the mixes), Berlin, Kym Amps, Eurythmics..

What's with the name, is there a story behind it?
The human experience is nothing but fanned out phases of consciousness. The moons of heavenly bodies mimic the phases we experience on a visual level, an archetypal level, and a magnetic level. Moons is Pop music at its simplest, but the grander picture is intended to be an exploration of the fluidity and chaos of the experiences we have in this universe. I started toying with this name after my mother showed me the classic ‘Paper Moon’ several years ago.

Is there a release date/debut album title yet?
Not just yet.

Will you be touring for said release?
Shows in Atlanta and NYC late Summer/Fall/Winter. Touring in 2013.

In a dream world whom would you like to tour with the most?
Hard question. Lets say…….Bowie on his "Let’s Dance" tour.

Got any other projects we should know about?
I produce and mix other projects on the side. Look out for new music from Atlanta bands Moodrings, Promise Keeper, and Dog Bite in 2013, all projects that I have worked on.

What movie would work best on mute while listening to your music?
Lawrence Of Arabia or anything Andreas Nilsson makes..

You can only keep/listen to ONE album for the rest of your life ..which album would it be?

Are you living your dream?
No, I’m quite awake.

Thanks Patrick!

Moons is currently working on his debut full length, (if I had to guess) look for that sometime in 2013...

EIC'S10Q'S w/Roll The Dice

"..The formula is pretty straight forward, piano + synths + nothing else (no computers) = a minimalists fan's dream come true. Like John Carpenter, maybe Laurie Anderson or Terry Riley mixed with a little bit of Arvo Part.."

Roll The Dice
Synthetic Microcosmic Progressions

Roll The Dice Bio:
On top of Peder Mannerfelt's other moniker, "The Subliminal Kid", he also produces for and tours with Fever Ray. Malcolm Pardon composes scores for film and television. Mr. Mannerfelt & Mr. Pardon shared studio space in Stockholm for several years, so it only seemed natural that they would finally decided to join forces and release something together. Every track started and ended in the same way with their debut release, there were no pre-conceived notions/ideas, but they had to complete a track by the end of each day, a kind of "free-for-all jam session" with a goal in mind. Earlier this year the duo released their official debut album. They continue to work together in as many mediums as possible.

Hello, how are you?
Peder: Just fine thank you, starting Monday morning with coffee in the studio.
Malcolm: VERY WELL THANKS. ENDING THE DAY IN THE STUDIO ,WITH A COFFEE.

What are you currently listening to?
Peder: Black Math Horseman, I missed the album when it came out last year but it´s been on constant repeat since I found it last week. I also just got the new record with the music from The Knifes opera "Tomorrow In A Year". It´absolutely amazing, it will blow your mind!
MALCOLM:TO BE HONEST AT THE MOMENT MUSIC HAS BEEN TOTALLY SURPASSED BY BBC DOCUMENTARIES AND NEWS PODCASTS...KEEPS YOU UP TO DATE, AND ALSO IT GIVES MY EARS A BREAK FROM THE MUSIC ...

I read online somewhere that you are connected to Fever Ray, care to explain that?

MALCOLM: I'M NOT, BUT:
Peder: Well i produced half of the album together with my studio partner Henrik (Van Rivers). We where also part of the live shows that took place last year. Me and Henrik work really close together doing production work and remixes. We also have a techno label called F and we are in the process of putting together our second release.

When you began writing music for RTD did you have a specific style/genre in mind?
Peder: No.
MALCOLM:THE IDEA WAS TO AVOID HAVING ANY SPECIFIC GENRES OR STYLES IN MIND, AND TO NOT HAVE ANY PRE-CONCEICVED IDEAS BEFORE EVERY SESSION. ALMOST LIKE A DOGMA, IT WAS IMPORTANT THAT THE APPROACH TO EVERY SONG WAS TO GO ABOUT IN IN A WAY THAT NONE OF US HAD TRIED BEFORE...

Who does all of you visuals live? Is there a theme involved?
Peder: Our friend Ruben Broman has done all the live visuals for us. It involved us going out in my boat at 5 a.m in the Stockholm archipelagos to get background footage to our first live show at the Norberg festival. We got some pretty grand plans for the future with a lot of old television sets, 70s TV cameras and video loops. It´s all a part of the process of Roll The Dice, having big dreams about stuff trying to accomplish them and ending up with something completely different.
Malcolm: AS WITH THE MUSIC,THERE ISN'T REALLY A THEME HERE, ITS MORE OF AN IMPROVISATION, FROM THE ACTUAL VISUALS AND ARTWORK, TO WHOM WE ACTUALLY CHOOSE TO WORK WITH...WORKING WITH PEOPLE WE HAVEN'T WORKED WITH BEFORE, GOES ALONG THE LINE OF AESTHETICS WE HAVE FOR OURSELVES, TO KEEP GETTING SURPRISED BY THE OUTCOME.
Peder: We just got a video for The New Black that our friends Frode & Marcus did. I have done some music for there art films in the past and they really liked the idea of doing something for us. We have also worked very close with our friend Gustaf non Arbin to create the artwork for the records (the CD version will have different artwork). It´s been really fun to work with just friends and let everybody contribute there ideas to the whole process.

Will you please play some US shows?
Peder: We already have :)
Malcolm: WE DID ONE SHOW IN NY LAST SEPTEMBER, AND WE WOULD OBVIOUSLY LOVE TO DO MORE.

If you could score any existing movie out there which one would it be and why?
Peder: Fantastic Planet. It´s actually an idea I had for a long time to do a new soundtrack together with all of the sound effects to that film. The original sounds are really really inspiring in it´s simplicity and it would be really cool to do a interpretation with the Roll The Dice mindset.

You can only keep/listen to ONE album for the rest of your life ..which album would it be?

Peder: Aphex Twin "Selected Ambient Works Vol 2"
MALCOLM: PEDER,WHAT ARE YOU SAYING!!...ROLL THE DICE,OF COURSE.

Are you living your dream?
MALCOLM: I'M DREAMING MY LIFE THROUGH.
Peder: Hell yes.

Thanx Peder!

Roll The Dice are currently putting together work they did for a their friend Gustaf, look for that in the future...

REVIEW: Bloodgroup - Dry Land

7 out of 10
Find it here.

Bloodgroup are a group of young Indie-Electro music makers from Iceland. They formed around the year 2006 and were quickly noticed after that, they are now considered one of Iceland's "best live acts to see". "Dry Land" is the group's second full length album, and much like the debut is chopped full of catchy synth hooks, perky/danceable drumbeats, sterling vocals, and enough "pop" to hook in anyone from the very first listen.

I'll admit it, I had never heard of Bloodgroup until a certain other Icelandic composer told me about them, however, I immediately checked them out once I (finally) knew of their existence. You see, I not only have a HUGE weakness for French music, but Icelandic music as well. Generally most of the music I hear from Iceland is downbeat & melancholy Ambient/"sad bastard" music (which is usually exactly how I like it), so when I found out Bloodgroup was "upbeat", "perky", and apparently AMAZING to witness live I had to know more. After soaking in their music on the web for a bit, I knew I had to have an entire album (Thanx BG!) and once I finally had said album in hand I knew I was in for a treat. Bloodgroup blend dancey Euro Pop with funky Electro Pop beats; the synthesizers are heavy, fun & sleek (exactly what you need to soundtrack a fun day), the vocals (mostly female with a few male accents) sound extraordinary, and the beats (rather than just your average 4-count sound) are unique and audacious. Really, what you have here, if they get the stateside attention they deserve, is an Indie Electronic dance smash-hit album. There a few "slower" moments as well, to say that it's just a "dance album" may be being a little too broad, it's an Electro album most definitely. So keep in mind, although it's mostly upbeat, it doesn't mean you couldn't chill out to "Dry Land" as well. I think you're in for a treat once you finally get a moment to wrap your headphones around this overall pleasing experience. Ok, my neck hurts now from all the bobbing, excuse me while I go get this massaged..

For fans of Chromatics, Sally Shapiro, The Knife, Figurine, and just all around catchy Electro-Pop music. Recommended.

Standout Tracks: My Arms, Wars (like the strings in this), Pro Choice (catchy-catchy), Moonstone (love the vocals and once again, strings), Battered (LOVE THE BEAT ON THIS ONE)

"Educational, I am, It's me, Mandragora"

A little bit ago I posted a few videos that had surfaced online.
The mystery of the artist "iamamiwhoami" grows bigger (it seems) every other week now..

Here is the latest video:

HERE are the older ones..

If you notice the names of the songs/videos are all in some sort of numerical code, well I began to think to myself, "What if it's a numerical/alphabet code of some sort....?"
Now I know, I am not the first person to think of this, but, I haven't found too many posts anywhere else, sooo...

Here's what I came up with:

VID #1: Prelude 699130082.451322-5.4.21.3.1.20.9.15.14.1.12
DECODED: FIIAC__HB.DEACBB-E.D.U.C.A.T.I.O.N.A.L.
There's a Goat image at the end of the video, why?

VID #2: 9.1.13.669321018
DECODED: I.A.M.FFICBJR
There's a Owl image at the end of the video, why?

VID #3: 9.20.19.13.5.723378
DECODED: I.T.S.M.E.GBCCGH
There's a Whale image at the end of the video, why?

VID #4: 13.1.14.4.18.1.7.15.18.1.1110
DECODED: M.A.N.D.R.A.G.O.R.A.KS (perhaps the "KS" isn't needed here)
There's a Bee image at the end of the video, why?
Mandragora by definition means "demon" OR "plant"..
Perhaps the last part in this code is referring to a release date?? "November 2010"

So, although some of the words are just gibberish, they almost form a sentence when placed together:
"Educational, I am, It's me, Mandragora"

P.S. I no longer think it's The Knife (maybe), I am now leaning towards Aphex Twin (MAYBE?). The titles of these tracks, if I decoded them correctly, seems like something Richard D. James would do...

WHO KNOWS?
Did I just waste your time, or is this mystery something that interests you too??

I didn't want to give in...

Especially without knowing (my guess is The Knife), but I love these.

I'll let you know more, ....when I know more. Do you know more?
