REVIEW: Mountains - Choral

7.25 out of 10

Mountains is a Brooklyn based Ambient/Atmospheric band/art project. Mountains has been compared to Fennesz and Brian Eno quite a bit. "Choral" is Mountains third official release, first for a major label (Thrill Jockey).

While listening to "Choral" you'll find it pretty easy to get yourself in a very relaxed/Zen-like state. "Choral", in my opinion, lives up to it's name. Liquid elements of drone, reverberated, as well as fabled/acoustic guitar, minimal piano work, hush-hush/lush synths, and a few warm clicks/noises create the backdrop to this gorgeous electronic ambient album. "Telescope" is one of the best songs I've heard in 2009. Strumming acoustic guitar, panning "horn-like" synths, and white noise that just builds on top of it self. It's simple, but it's just soo hard not to disappear into your headphones while listening to it. "Add Infinity", which sounds like an Alps song produced by Pan American, would fit rather nicely on the Kranky imprint. It is Both psychedelic and lush.

"Choral" is, in the truest sense, an ambient album. But rather than most ambient albums which just focus on sharing "interesting" sounds/environments, "Choral" submerges you in a tank full of aquatic affections and sincerity. Go ahead and jump in, the water is nice and warm.

Standout Tracks: Choral, TELESCOPE, Add Infinity, Melodica, Sheets Two
