REVIEW: Six Organs Of Admittance - Asleep On The Floodplain

8.75 out of 10

Ben Chasny is one of those artists that get somewhat ignored by the general public/deserve so much more attention. Although he (probably) shares his place in the Indie Music Hall Of Fame, I always thought he would be more "household" by now. More than just talented he's prolific as well. Look the guy up on All Music and you'll see he's got quite the large list of collaborations & solo work. He's great at what he does (all of it--seriously). "Asleep On The Floodplain" is number 13(!) since '98 (his debut) and is, in this fan's opinion, his most accomplished work to date.

For some reason the term "modern primitive" comes to mind when explaining this album bluntly. Heavy on the Dark-Psych organ drenched Drone-Folk, delicate finger pluckings, & very smooth vocals "Asleep On The Floodplain" is one of the best albums of the year. The vibe/sound is similar to past opus', only somewhat more bare-boned/stripped down. The songs ebb & flow between each other with virtually invisible transitions. From fireside Folklore to ominous Droney Psych sounds. They sound detached from each other narratively speaking, but they're actually pretty cohesive. If the sounds of sensual back country surrealism interest you..Just buy the damn album already!

If you're looking for your next Psych Folk purchase, look no further. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Standout Tracks: Light Of The Light (my 2nd fav track--reminds me of Califone a lil'), Hold But Let Go (I can't tell you how many times I've listened to this song this year..LISTEN TO IT NOW.), Dawn Running Home
