REVIEW: The Slaves - Spirits Of The Sun

9 out of 10

I had never heard of The Slaves up until a couple weeks ago when I got a newsletter from one of my favorite/most respectable online music retailers. In the mini-review they stated something like this; "for fans of Tim Hecker, Grouper, and/or My Bloody Valentine..", (!..obviously.) I had to know more. Turns out this is their (a Portland duo) 5th album! How did I miss out on these guys!? Anyways, one thing that is "new" to the band is that 'Spirits Of The Sun' is their first studio album. See what happens when you "experiment" with your sound? You find your chi, you achieve nirvana, you're oozing with creativity, and now you have recorded your first masterpiece.. This is the music I live for.

'Spirits Of The Sun' starts off with an celestial drone/hum, slowly white noise synths and bleak guitar wash distortions fade in (you can get that track, "111", HEAR). Before you know it you will be submerged into a subaquatic concerto from which you will not want to escape (nor will you be able to in the right mind set). When track two comes in, "The River" ..you are now obsessed. You need this album everyday more and more. Your veins are now thick with the spirits of the sun, you are on a different terrain, a much calmer one. Heroin addicts will use this album as a weening device. Music junkies will once again rise up, then sit back down with their headphones and lock themselves in their dark & dreary rooms to be pleased, very pleased (over and over again). This is unbelievably fu██ing gorgeous.

Surreal audial imagery between your ears/on your brain inducing fluttering ambiance, chimeric distain, and severe apathy. What's not to like about that? (oh-so-very) Recommended.

Standout Tracks: ALL, but ESPECIALLY; ..all.
