EIC's 10Q's w/ Kid Smpl

"..perfectly pasted bits of city life after dark.."

Kid Smpl
Midnight Metropolitan Mannerisms

Kid Smpl Bio:
Kid Smpl is the current alias of 22-year-old Seattle producer Joey Butler. A veteran of stage and studio, Butler has been busy developing a style of atmospheric bass music that continues to deepen with each release. His signature sound incorporates lush synths, meditative low-end, muffled vocals samples, and warm textural field recordings, punctuated by drums that straddle every end of the tempo spectrum. The sounds are spread across a canvas made wide with breathing room. Briefly put, it evokes the introspection of a far-flung space colony’s forest terrarium, late into the evening, alone or with close company. After a string of successful releases showcasing this style, Butler is gearing up for his first full-length, to be released on the newly-conceived Hush Hush music label. The album promises to provide a fully realized picture of Butler as a producer, articulating the hazy future vision he has been praised for on numerous EPs, tracks, and remixes released to date.

Hello, how are you?
Yo! I'm good. On a plane at the moment.

What are you currently listening to?
A slowed version of Burial's "NYC".

What's with the name, is there a story behind it?
I wish there was but it's nothing that interesting really haha. Just thought it sounded cool.

LOVE your debut EP, care to tell us a little bit about it; theme, recording process, likes/dislikes, etc.?
Thanks! The EP is based upon basically the general themes of my music. I like to focus on space a lot and hope to explore it through themes like the night, space (like outerspace and nerdy sci-fi stuff), solitude, separation, isolation, loneliness, etc.  The music was all made on my laptop and written over a few months. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Will you be touring for said release?
There won't be a tour for the EP. There has been some talk about a tour following the upcoming LP though, but nothing is confirmed at the moment.

In a dream world whom would you like to tour with the most?
Wu-Tang, Burial, and Drake.

Got any other projects we should know about?
There's a remix EP of the "Escape Pod" EP called "Dope Pac SE" coming out next month. Then a full length album in the fall. There might be some fun bonus stuff along with the album as well.

What movie would work best on mute while listening to your music?

You can only keep/listen to ONE album for the rest of your life ..which album would it be?
Burial's 'Untrue'

Are you living your dream?
 Getting there :)

Thanx Matthew and Joey!

Kid Smpl is about to release his follow up to 'Escape Pod', look for that soon...
