REVIEW: †‡† – Ghetto Ass Witch

7.75 out of 10

When you surf the net looking for the next "big thing" lately the term "Witch House" or "Drag" pops up nearly ever other click. These genres (for the unaware) are the same. They refer to a kind of music that is equal parts dark, sludgy, Trancey, Industrial-y, and somewhat Hip Hop influenced. Post-Pop music really. †‡† (aka Ritualz) are one of the acts in said genre and should be/will be turning a few heads with their latest release "Ghetto Ass Witch". This is one of those albums where the cover speaks miles for the music within; Trashy/drug influenced dark & morbid Dance-Pop filth.

"Ghetto Ass Witch" begins with a dark slow-core Trancey/Industrial synth sound scratched and pulled over top "barely audible" words. Once track two begins the beat comes in. Kick, hand clap, kick hand clap, etc. Very simple (but effective enough for the music that follows), the synths in this track are where it's at (I love the pitch shifting). Slowly a Trance/raver like vibe begins taking over the beat as well as the rest of the album. Before you know it you are officially apart of Ritualz drug trip/bizarre after hours night club. You may get a little scared, you'll hear sounds that compliment as well contrast others, and you may even become a little agile or angry. You WILL want to dance. As far as the "Drag/Witch House" genre is concerned †‡† have my vote as one of the best bands. A little more "dancey" than other Drag artists, but still mopey and macabre. "Ghetto Ass Witch" is one of the most overplayed albums on my Ipod this year.

If you like your music dark as f$^K with a bit of late 90's Rave thrown into the mix you will love this. Recommended.

Standout Tracks: All. Especially; Ghetto Ass Witch (Feat. Gvcci-Hvcci) (LOVE this track, reminds me of Wumpscut), Laguna (Paul Oakenfold eat your heart out)
