New Soft Metals on the way..

Soft Metals' 'Lenses' comes out July 16th via Captured Tracks.

I LOVE this new track from Soft Metals, then again I love everything they've done so far.. Chris Carter and Klaus Schulze as well as a few other vintage 70's Synth innovators were the main inspirations behind the new album so I expect great things..

REVIEW: Craft Spells - Gallery

6 out of 10

Craft Spells is blessed with having all the elements of hipsterdom that any “Indie” band needs for success these days. You have front man Justin Vallesteros’s romantic tale of lonely-bedroom amateur turned Indie idol. You have four attractive, trendy young guys who look like Urban Outfitters’s next cover models. You even have their dreamy nostalgic pop that just oozes a fetishistic obsession with the eighties -- something today’s music industry can’t seem to escape.

I mention all of these qualities because as I listen to their most recent release, 'Gallery EP', Craft Spells’ image as a band seems inseparable from their music. The first track, “Still Left With Me,” with its hazy vocals, flat drum-machine beats, and lyrics of adolescent love (“Keep you close and tough like history / After the fire, You’re still left with me”), immediately draws parallels with the likes of Neon Indian and Washed Out. “Sun Trails” even takes such theatrics to the next level, as its sinuous bass lines, melodious guitar interludes, and flashy disco beats (New Order’s “Temptation,” anyone?) would easily make anyone recall the flashiness of early New Wave.

Despite all of these critiques, it has to be said: behind Craft Spells’s cliched sound is the work of a truly gifted songwriter. On the latter half of the EP, Vallesteros’s abilities to write catchy, mature melodies shines through with the dance floor-ready “Leave My Shadow” and melodramatic ballad “Gallery.” Tracks like these make one wonder how much more this band could have to offer, if only they’d separate themselves from the bindings of image and hype. But for now, though this is a fun listen, don’t expect anything you haven’t heard before.

REVIEW: Soft Metals - Soft Metals

9 out of 10

I'm gonna get straight to the point with this record, it's quite possibly the best piece of Electro Pop/Art ever made. Just when I thought the genre was (re)dead two up and comers arrive and completely shake up my beliefs. This album is the most perfect combination of "futuristic meets sexy" music, it's also "peppy" while (remaining) soothing but still toe tapping. Soft Metals have set the new bar in Neo Synth Pop sounds, and I don't expect many others to come close anytime soon.

I really love what Captured Tracks is doing for "yesterdays" Synth Pop scene, they've got an interesting bunch of artists that's for sure. Soft Metals, in my opinion, are the best (but jeez.. there's so many, so I don't know). To be honest their debut LP would almost sound more at home on Ghostly. In-fact, word is Jason (from Solvent) is working on a mix of some sorts for the duo, but you didn't hear that from me (or did you..are you even listening?). ::ahem:: On Soft Metals debut LP you finally get to hear the duo hone in on their trade to near audial perfection. All of those singles and EP's have all been leading up to this one (they're great, but this is better/their best). Soft Metals have perfected what yesterdays Synth Pop artists left stained on their ears so many years ago. Lots of synths, drum pads, sultry vocals, a few obscure sounds, and pure 100% "catchy goodness".

Go get this now, it's one of the year's best. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Standout Tracks: Voices, The Cold World Melts, Pain (on repeat-peat peat-peat), Do You Remember, In Throes (great ender)
