EIC'S10Q'S w/Belong

"..Ambient/Droney elements in full effect with a strong sense of well crafted Pop songs laying underneath all of it.."

Belong
Becalmed Subaquatic Sensation

Belong Bio:
Belong is an American experimental music duo composed of Turk Dietrich and Michael Jones. The group formed in New Orleans in 2002. Their debut album, October Language, was recorded in 2004 and released in 2006. The duo's sound blends ambient and glitch styles, with a focus on guitar textures. Reviews of their music have made comparisons to current glitch and electronica artists like Fennesz and Tim Hecker, as well as the early 1990s Shoegazing sound attributed to bands such as My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Guitars and synthesizers are run through various effects to produce the band's unique sound. October Language was created in Dietrich's bedroom and is said to be strongly linked in theme and tone to the duo's New Orleans locale.

Hello, how are you?
(Belong did not answer this one, we'll assume they're doing great!:)

What are you currently listening to?

Pye Audio Corner "Black Mill Tapes Volume 2", Sandwell District "Feed Forward", Martial Canterel "You Today", Tropic Of Cancer "The Sorrow Of Two Blooms", Echologist "Subterranean", Gary War "Police Water EP", Raime "Raime EP", Jefre Cantu-Ledesma "Love Is A Stream", Sleep ∞ Over "Outer Limits", Zwischenwelt "Paranormale Aktivitat", Leyland Kirby "Intrigue & Stuff Vol 1", Mark Fell "UL8"

Is the name "Belong" a reference to anything?
Nothing specific. We just liked the way it looked and sounded.

What do you mean by "Common Era"/what is the overall theme?
It is a reference to something specific, but that is something the listener can make up their own mind on. Any interpretation that the listener has is perfectly acceptable.

While listening to "Common Era" (the millions of times that I have) I really get the sense of listening to a "Loveless b-sides" album, were you guys influenced by that album at all?

We are both big fans of My Bloody Valentine, so, it's something that is probably always with us. That being said, it's not something we have consciously thought about in a long time, and there is really nothing about "Common Era" that is referencing them directly.

I love how "fuzzy & distant" the vocals are on the album, although sometimes it's hard to make out the lyrics. Can you tell us what most of the lyrics are about?
Glad you like the "fuzzy & distant" quality of the vocals … we do to. As far as lyrics go, they are whatever you want them to be.

When playing your instruments do you guys prefer recording or playing live?
We are a studio band first. Nothing is played "live" in the traditional sense. Things are recorded individually one at a time and then arranged, mangled and produced inside the computer.

What's the best Shoegaze and/or Dream Pop album you guys have heard in the last 5 years?

I can't say that I have. Shoegaze is not really a genre that interest us very much. Although, everything that Grouper has released is beyond amazing ...... but I would never call her dream pop or Shoegaze in the traditional sense.

You can only keep/listen to ONE album for the rest of your life ..which album would it be?
There's so many albums. It's not a fair question. Today if I had to pick it would either be "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" or The Zombie's "Odyssey & Oracle"

Are you living your dream?

No. If I was, I wouldn't be bar tending four nights a week.

Thanx Brian & Turk!

Belong are currently taking it easy and (hopefully/most likely) slowly, but surely, working on a follow up to "Common Era"...
