REVIEW: Maps - Let Go Of The Fear

7 out of 10

"Let Go Of The Fear" is the newest Maps single off of the unreleased "Turning The Mind" (Maps second full length), which as far as I know comes out this year. "We Can Create", whether James Chapman (Maps) likes the word or not, was a Nu-Gaze album. Which is classical usage of Shoegaze music mixed with modern electronics such as a computer and/or synthesizers. On his newest single Mr. Chapman wanted to stray as far away as possible from the word "Shoegaze" and enter the world of Dance.

Don't be afraid, it's a terrific twist in his writing ability and it shows Maps will not just fade away like some of the other Electronic Nu-Gaze acts coming out lately. "Let Go Of The Fear" begins with a 4-count kick, a repetitive sample stating the song's title and quickly kicks into gear with a lo-fi synth arpeggiation accompanied by crescendos of vocal distortions and terrific electronic sampling. There is a hint of Maps "old way's" underneath the track, but definitely a new direction.

"Turning The Mind" is supposed to be an album about sobering up and straitening out your life, based off of this single I would say our boy James has proceeded quite nicely with his "fresh start".

Standout Tracks: Let Go Of The Fear, the remix is ok too, but I like the original better.
